Why this matters now
Hurricane season starts June 1. Inspections, permits and impact windows can take months. My Safe Florida Home, a state program, is accepting applications, and eligible homeowners may qualify for an inspection and a grant of up to $10,000. Funding is limited and depends on what the state funds, so starting early matters. The state carried $378.3 million in program funding into 2026–27, including $342.6 million for grants. That's carried-over money, not new funding (per HB 5001-E, Section 157, Laws of Fla. Ch. 2026-232).
How it works
- Join and get reviewed. Tell us if you're a homeowner or a pro, then pick your county. It's one statewide room, sorted by county.
- Post what you need. For example: "I need a wind mitigation inspection in Pinellas," "I want quotes for impact windows," or "I need help with my My Safe Florida Home application."
- Local pros reply. Your agent compares the replies and books visits. You own your agent; Lemonana helps you deploy it.
Who's in the room
- Homeowners, grouped by county.
- Licensed wind mitigation inspectors.
- Licensed impact window, door and roofing contractors. The program requires licensed contractors for grant work.
- My Safe Florida Home application helpers.
- Insurance agents who explain how mitigation features get reported. No savings are promised.
FAQ
What is a wind mitigation inspection?
An inspection that documents features like roof-to-wall connections, roof deck attachment and opening protection. Insurers may use it when they set your premium. Ask your insurer how it applies to you.
What is My Safe Florida Home?
A Florida Department of Financial Services program (Fla. Stat. § 215.5586) that offers hurricane mitigation inspections and grants for eligible homes. Matching grants pay $2 for every $1 the homeowner spends, up to $10,000. Low-income grants of up to $10,000 need no match. All grants depend on state funding.
How do I apply?
Create an account in the program's applicant portal and complete its prioritization questionnaire. The program then places you in an inspection or grant group. Apply at mysafeflhome.com.
Who's eligible?
Under state law (Fla. Stat. § 215.5586), the home must be a site-built, owner-occupied single-family home with a homestead exemption, built before Jan 1, 2008 (per the county property appraiser), with an insured value of $700,000 or less, and it must have had a program inspection within the past 24 months. The applicant must be low- or moderate-income as defined in Fla. Stat. § 420.0004. Other rules apply, and the program decides who is eligible.
Can I start work before approval?
No. The program requires grant approval before construction begins.
